C. Dynamic shifting of the defence

The defenders pass a ball to each other within the marked zone.

This requires a dynamic shifting of the individual defenders.

The sequence in our illustrated example:

We again start with an attack whereby the ball is located in zone 1. Attacker A passed the ball to attacker B in zone 2. The defenders shift in direction of the ball. We already learned in example B which positions are to be taken in these conditions.

D1. Attack from the wing position – an attacker without ball on the wing

In this unit, as the animation implies, an attacker moves on the wing. The attacker controlling the ball is in the center of the field.

Once the attacker is in zone 1, defender A monitors his paths and covers closely. Defender B (located somewhat deeper) blocks the path of the pass, in order to prevent a pass into the back space of the dynamic attacker. Defenders C and D are aligned with defender A.

If the attacker is in zone 4, defender D controls his paths and covers closely. Defender C (located somewhat deeper) blocks the path of the pass, in order to prevent a pass to the dynamic attacker.

Defenders A and B are aligned with defender D.

D2. Attack in center – an attacker without ball in the center

IIn this unit, as implied by the animation, an attacker moves in the defense center. The attacker who controls the ball is in the center of the field.

If the attacker is in zone 2, defender B controls his paths and covers closely. Defender C (standing slightly deeper) blocks the path of the pass, in order to prevent a pass into the back space of the dynamic attacker.

Defenders A and D are aligned with defender B.

If the attacker is in zone 3, defender C controls his paths and covers closely. Defender B (standing slightly deeper) blocks the path of the pass, so as to prevent a pass into the back space of the dynamic attacker.

Defenders A and D are aligned with defender C.

E. Dynamic attacker without ball – dynamic shifting of the defence in training

In this sequence, as indicated by the animation, an attacker moves in the defence center. The attacker controlling the ball is located in the center of the field.

We have already gleaned from example B which positions have to be taken in these circumstances.

3. Summary

In case of an attack through the center, the central defenders (B + C) take care of securing the back space against the dynamic attacker, by blocking the path of the pass. If the defender is located in zone 2 or 3, defenders B and C secure alternatively.

If the defender is located in zone 1 or 4, it is the central defender standing closer to the attacker who will secure.

Always take note: Also the goalkeeper secures the back space!
